Historiography of Colonial Latin America

This graduate seminar serves to introduce you to the study of Colonial Latin America in the wake of the 1992 quincentennial, principally through select monographs. We will also survey some key articles and older works, as well as some annotated primary sources, such as the one cited above. As this quote from an indigenous Mexican author from the town of Amecameca demonstrates, history was already being written in the colonial period, and often by non-European authors. How do histories such as Chimalpahin’s Annals fit into our broader conception of colonial Latin American historiography? And how might we categorize new, interdisciplinary works?
